Well...it was kind of silly, once you pointed it out. There's no reason to hold so rigidly to tradition when it's overcomplicating things.

[Kakyoin held out the pin, shrugging and seeming honestly sincere about that.]

[digiorno]

Right . . .

[A little absently. He turns the pin over, then lays it flat in the palm of his hand.]

Is there a particular color you want to match?

[lapidarius]

I don't really know--just anything that won't make it look out of place, I guess.

Giorno, are you okay?

[digiorno]

Hm?

[He looks up, blinking. Like he's forgotten what they were talking about, which he's trying to. And yet.]

Oh. Well, I just feel a little stupid for asking? I guess. I don't know. Do you think gold and silver and green would be too much?

[lapidarius]

...I don't think you're stupid. It was just a question.

[and then:]

Hierophant's eyes are yellow. I think it'd be fine.

[digiorno]

I made a big fuss about it and now I'm asking, that seems stupid.

[He resumes pawing through the shoes, humming to himself a little under his breath. Gold and silver and green . . . a light green, maybe, or pale gold? There's something towards the back of the rack.]

Are there any greens you don't like?

[lapidarius]

It's not stupid to just ask something like that casually.

[Kakyoin looked over Giorno's shoulder, following up with:]

Not really. Neon green, maybe, but aside from that any shade's fine.

[digiorno]

[His lips twist uncertainly, brow furrowing as he keeps looking, but he doesn't say anything in response. After a few moments, he finds what he's looking for and pulls it out: a pair of ballet flats in soft kelly green with gold embroidered accents over the toe.]

Mm?

[lapidarius]

...Those are nice. What do you think?

[digiorno]

I think . . .

[Well, it wasn't what he was originally thinking, but.]

I think green on the shoes, then silver and gold . . . I think it would look good. You could do your nails green, too. If you wanted.

[lapidarius]

That sounds like a good idea. You might have to help me with that a little, though.

[...]

Giorno...it's just us right now, you know. You can talk to me, if you want to.

[digiorno]

[Ah. He smiles, crooked.]

Some other time, maybe. I'm not going to be responsible for you talking about anything but your anniversary today.

[lapidarius]

Giorno... [He folded his arms, concerned more than actually upset.] If I didn't want to know, I wouldn't ask. I won't push you, but don't stop yourself just because of what day it is.

[digiorno]

[For a moment he just watches Kakyoin, eyes drifting over his face for some indication of--what? That he's lying? That's stupid. Whatever it is, he doesn't find it.]

I don't want to make you sad.

[lapidarius]

I'm going to be sad regardless if I figure out you're sad and just not telling me.

[digiorno]

[. . .]

I don't want good things to keep happening if they're just going to go away again. So I want to get everything right. In case that helps. That's all.

[lapidarius]

...I understand why you'd feel uncertain. But I don't think something like that hinges on anything we do or don't do.

[digiorno]

I know. It's stupid. I'm just tired of it, that's all.

[lapidarius]

[Kakyoin held out one arm slightly in the usual invitation, public location be damned.]

I am, too. I'm tired and worried, and it's terrible.

[digiorno]

[Oh. That takes some of the fight out of him. He's . . . a little reluctant. But after a brief pause, he steps to Kakyoin's side and tucks himself under his arm.]

I know. That's the other reason I didn't want to tell you.

[lapidarius]

I'm glad that you did. [and you're getting a damn hug.] I think...it's better to be worried with someone than to try holding something like that alone.

[digiorno]

Yeah, probably.

[Still sulky. But the hug helps.]

Do you think it ever goes away?

[lapidarius]

Sometimes, just a little. But a little can be enough to live with until things start to look better.

[digiorno]

. . . Okay. That helps.

[He buries his face in Kakyoin's shoulder.]

I hope it's a little better soon, anyway.

[lapidarius]

I know, Giorno. We're here right now, and I promise you that's not going to change in the next five minutes. That's something, isn't it?
