[Giorno actually pouted a little. That was a really shitty catch, Kakyoin . . . but he climbed down off the chair with his pudding cup anyway, then started digging around for spoons. When he found the right drawer, he pulled two out and threw one at, yes, Kakyoin's head.]

Does it count as early or late? I haven't slept at all. I really don't feel tired, my mind won't stop going.

[He tucked his loose hair behind his ear, put the spoon between his teeth, and started fiddling with the plastic top of the pudding cup. His nemesis.]

[It was Hierophant that caught that, quickly wrapping around the flying spoon before it knocked its user's glasses off.]

A bit of both, I guess--it's technically morning.

[Shrugging, he pulled over a chair and sat down. (...so this was apparently just normal)]

Are you doing okay?

[digiorno]

[He shifted the spoon to the corner of his mouth, then tried again.]

I could ask you the same question. I probably should have already.

[He took his time pulling the chair back over to the table and settling in; once he had the top peeled off, he folded it in half, then in quarters, and then he frowned sharply and unfolded it into half again.]

People keep getting upset with me for not . . . getting upset? So for a while I was staying up on purpose, and now it's sort of happening by accident.

I guess it'd be the expected response if you were upset. [Hierophant dropped the spoon into his hand, and Kakyoin twirled it between his fingers instead of opening his own cup just yet.]

I'm not saying you need to be, or even that you should be. I'm just assuming that...you know, not being upset looks a little like 'being upset and hiding it'.

Mmm. Maybe I am? I don't know. Sometimes it just doesn't feel like anything. It was like that after Bruno died, too. Just a lot of nothing.

I had a really odd conversation with Jonathan, though. I don't understand how Victorians got anything done.

...Odd in what way, exactly?

[let's start with that]

I don't know, maybe it's normal. Are parents supposed to do this thing where they try really hard to understand you but are somehow functionally incapable of doing so?

[sweats nervously]

...yeah, actually. I think so.

[digiorno]

Oh. I didn't know.

[.....stares]

What? Nothing.

[continues fidgeting with shirt, as one does]

[A sharp look.]

You're looking at me like I've grown extra heads. You've been looking like that since you walked in, what is going on?

[lapidarius]

[OH MY GOD DON'T BE MAD MAFIA FRIEND]

I-I just...what exactly are you...er, wearing?

[digiorno]

What does that have to do with . . . ? It's a nightgown?

It's just not exactly what I'd have expected, that's all!

[ain't gonna judge but good lord warn someone first]

Well, I wasn't exactly expecting a party in the kitchen at 4 in the morning, Kakyoin.

[If he was he'd be wearing a suit, duh.]

If I'd known you'd be here and in serious danger of having a heart attack I'd have worn a wifebeater and boxer shorts as per societal custom.

Don't be ridiculous, it just startled me.

That's good. You really wouldn't last long in this house if that was all it took.

...So now that we've cleared that up, I'm pretty sure that kind of thing is just normal for parents in general. Did Jonathan say something particularly strange?

[digiorno]

No, no. Nothing like that. It was more . . .

[Humming thoughtfully, he rested the spoon on the tip of his nose.]

He was trying so hard, you could see him trying, and . . . maybe I'm just not used to people trying so hard in that particular way for me?

Maybe not. I don't think anyone could blame you if that were the case. [Kakyoin fidgeted with the spoon in his hand, spinning it a few times like one might do with a pen. Finally he set it down and stood up, turning to keep his hands busy by making tea like he'd planned to in the first place. Two cups instead of one would be easy enough.]

But if he's trying so hard to understand you despite the fact that he may not be able to-...

['I'm his mother, yet I still don't know why he's like that.']

...it just means he cares about you enough to know it's worth the attempt.

Mmm. That's what I was thinking. I just wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong. I don't really know how to be anybody's son. Especially not to a good person.

. . . He was trying so hard, though. It was sort of adorable.

Jonathan's too good of a person to not try his hardest. I think that's really admirable, myself.

But I don't really know if there's a wrong way to go about it, other than just resisting every attempt the whole way. [you know, like kakyoin]

[digiorno]

He wasn't resisting. I think everything was just so confusing, because it's so different from what he's used to.

It must be really hard to live out of time like that. Most people here are closer to where we are, aren't they? So it's not strange. He'd have a heart attack if he met Ibuki.

...Honestly, I think a lot of people would risk a heart attack if they met Ibuki.

Oh, come on, she's not that bad.
